How to Connect to VPS Using Microsoft Remote Desktop



Connecting to a Virtual Private Server (VPS) using Microsoft Remote Desktop is an alternative method to the native Windows app, Remote Desktop Connection, and it allows you to access and manage your server remotely.

Prerequisites


VPS Details: Ensure you have the IP address, username, and password of your VPS. If you cannot find them, look into our guide -
Finding Your Server Login Credentials

Microsoft Remote Desktop: Make sure you have Microsoft Remote Desktop installed on your device.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:
Open Microsoft Remote Desktop application. This is what you'll see when you open the application for the first time


Click "Add", then "PCs" like shown on the picture


For "PC name" you should enter IP address you previously found on portal.


For Display name which is an optional field you can enter whatever you'd like to recognize the VPS(For example 'ChartVPS')

After that has been done you need to enter your user account. That's done by pressing the "+" symbol which will open the following page
For Username and Password use the credentials you found on portal


Again, for Display name which is an optional field you can enter whatever you'd like to recognize the VPS(For example 'ChartVPS')

After this has been done, click 'Save' on both windows and you should get something like this on your initial screen



Finally, click on "PC" icon to connect to your server.

Troubleshooting



Connection Errors:
If you receive errors, verify the IP address, username, and password. Ensure your VPS is online and accessible.
Firewall Issues:
Ensure that your local firewall or network settings are not blocking the Remote Desktop connection.
